June is National Adopt A Cat Month
Yes, that’s right! Each year in June shelters across the country celebrate Adopt A Cat month, also called Adopt A Shelter Cat Month, in an effort to promote cat adoptions and help educate the public on responsible pet ownership and cat care. According to the American Humane Association, there are almost as many homeless cats (70 million) as there are cats with homes (75 million). The Association also states that the number of shelter cats increases in the spring and summer due to an increase in the number of litters of cats and that about 71% of these animals will have to be put to sleep because there are not enough loving homes. When you think about all of those cats being needlessly destroyed it’s quite heartbreaking. That’s a huge number! We as a society should not permit it to continue. The public needs to behave responsibly.
Cats are terrific pets. They’re independent and dependent all at the same time. I’d have a cat over a dog any day. I’ve always said that one of my favorite sounds ever is the sound of a cat purring. It’s been a well known fact for some time that having a cat as a pet can be good for your health. The Berlin Longevity Institute states that picking up a cat has a calming effect that causes blood pressure to drop and the heart rate to slow, and that over time owning a cat could extend a person’s life up to ten years. 9 Lives offers a list of ways your life will enriched by adopting a cat.

Our apartment is at max cat per square footage. We have four in a small one bedroom. It breaks our hearts to have to pass up a kitty that needs a home. Thanks for highlighting this issue. Spaying and neutering pets could fix the problem in our lifetimes.
